# Bacillus licheniformis

This microbe is a member of Group 1b *Bacilli*known for centrally located oblong spores that do not distend the sporangium.  They are catalase positive and ferment carbohydrates without production of gas.  They grow well over a wide range of temperatures.

*Bacillus licheniformis* is commonly found in the soil and on bird feathers. It is not associated with human infections, although it has been recovered from a variety of infections in immunocompromised patients.  As a food contaminant, it is found in dairy products and can contribute to “ropiness” in bread.  It has commercial value through its production of a protease used in detergents, as well as antibiotics such as Bacitracin.
