This is a small Gram negative rod-shaped organism isolated from human clinical specimens (appendicitis, wounds), but not known to have any clinical significance. Found in a variety of places: water and soil, dairy products, intestinal tracts of gastropods and fish. Gas is produced from glucose and strains are motile. It was originally thought to be a Citrobacter, but DNA hybridization studies show it to be unique and worthy of its own genus.
