Streptococcus equi

This Gram positive coccus is most frequently found in pairs and short to long chains of spherical or ovoid cells. Cells are catalase negative and exhibit facultatively anaerobic metabolism. Growth does not occur below 20 C. This is the causative agent for equine strangles, isolated from upper respiratory discharges and the soils they contaminate.
