This is a small Gram negative rod-shaped organism isolated from drinking water, surface water, and soil, but not known to have any clinical significance. Gas is produced from glucose and most strains are motile. It is differentiated from biogroup 2 based on ability to ferment sucrose and raffinose and the inability to ferment sorbitol.
