Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (3%) is used as the reagent for the catalase test. The liquid hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) serves as the substrate for the enzyme catalase, which splits it into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2). The oxygen generates abundant bubbles in the liquid, indicating a positive test. Bacteria lacking catalase do not liberate bubbles when hydrogen peroxide is added to colonies.
