# Kovac’s reagent

Kovac’s reagent consists of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde dissolved in HCl.

Five drops or so of the reagent are added to an overnight culture grown in [tryptone broth](https://vumicro.com/docs/tryptone-broth/). Development of a red ring atop the broth is indicative of the production of [indole](https://vumicro.com/docs/indole-production-test/), a breakdown product in the digestion of the amino acid tryptophan.
