Optochin, ethylhydrocupreine hydrochloride, is a chemical that is toxic to Streptococcus pneumoniae. Other alpha-hemolytic Streptococci are rarely sensitive to the chemical. Optochin is therefore useful in the identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the clinical laboratory.
