Proteus penneri

This new species used to be a biogroup of Proteus vulgaris. Straight rods which are Gram negative, this bacterium uses urea but only some strains produce hydrogen sulfide. It produces gas from glucose. Growth is best at 35-37 C.  The microbe has been recovered from wound infections and has been isolated from infections of the urinary system, most likely nosocomial in nature.
