Straight rods that are Gram negative, this bacterium uses glucose but does not frequently produce gas. Produce urease. Growth is best at 35-37 C. It is pathogenic in humans and other animals, causing gastroenteritis, infecting burns and the urinary tract, and many other nosocomial infections. In nature it can be found in water.
