Streptococcus salivarius

This Gram positive coccus is most frequently found in pairs and short to long chains of spherical cells. Cells are catalase negative and exhibit facultatively anaerobic metabolism. This species can grow at 45 C. Found in the mouths (and occasionally the feces) of rats and humans. It is typically a harmless member of the normal flora of the mouth but can cause septicemia in compromised patients.
