{"id":9877,"date":"2022-03-23T22:04:41","date_gmt":"2022-03-24T03:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vumicro.com\/?post_type=docs&#038;p=9877"},"modified":"2024-09-17T10:25:22","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T15:25:22","password":"","slug":"shigella-dysenteriae","status":"publish","type":"docs","link":"https:\/\/vumicro.com\/es\/docs\/shigella-dysenteriae\/","title":{"rendered":"Shigella dysenteriae"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The species of the genus Shigella are very similar by all methods of comparison with those of the genus Escherichia. .\u00a0 This microbe is a Gram negative, rod-shaped bacterium which is one of the world\u2019s most common causes of the gastrointestinal disease called shigellosis or bacterial dysentery (characterized by bloody diarrhea), responsible for over 100,000,000 cases and at least 100,000 deaths annually. \u00a0<em>Shigella dysenteriae<\/em> is the most common cause of epidemics of shigellosis worldwide, particularly in crowded conditions with poor sanitation available. Complications can include rectal prolapse, joint pain, and a variety of other issues.\u00a0 It is also associated with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome which can result in renal failure.\u00a0 Victims can be humans and other primates, with occasional reports of infections in other mammals. Source of infection is fecal-oral, typically from contaminated water or food.\u00a0\u00a0 The rods are straight and nonmotile (unlike <em>Escherichia spp<\/em>.). And unlike most members of the Enterobacteriaceae they do not produce gas when fermenting sugars.
