Enterococcus avium

This Gram positive coccus is most frequently found in pairs and short chains of ovoid cells. It is catalase negative and exhibits facultatively anaerobic metabolism. Isolated from chickens, feces of man and domestic animals, and from purulent discharges. An opportunistic pathogen that rarely causes human infections.
