4) Adding activities

Through the Admin area, you can create activities and assign them to your students so that they show up in their list of Unknown Sessions when they log into the VUMIE lab. First, click the Activities tab, and then click Create Activity:

Activity settings

When creating a new activity, you can either pick a single bacterium to assign to all students, or you can randomize the unknowns for each student, either among all available unknowns or from a specific subgroup of unknowns.

You can assign the activity to one or all sections that you have access to. And you can set a specific date and time that you want the activity to become available to your students. They won’t see it until this time.

If you want to give specific instructions to your students when they start the activity, you can add a Startup Message for them to see.

Customizing unknowns per student

If you’d prefer to manually assign an unknown to each student instead of randomizing them, you can do this after you’ve created the activity but before the students have started them. We suggest you make the activity available at a future time in order to make this easier.

Once you’ve created the activity, you’ll see it show up in the activity list. Click the View Labs button to open a window where you can customize the unknown assigned to each student.

Click the dropdown to change the unknown. Once the student has begun work on this activity, it’ll be locked and you’ll no longer be able to edit it.
