7) Canvas integration

You can upload your grades from VUMIE directly into Canvas LMS! If you’re interested in enabling this integration, fill out this form.

Choosing assignments to add to Canvas

If you’d like to add VUMIE assignments to Canvas in bulk, first locate each assignment you want to add to canvas and check the Add to LMS checkbox.

For lab activities, go to Assignments > Activities tab, and click Edit for the activity you want to add to Canvas.

For quizzes, go to Assignments > Quizzes tab, and check the Add to LMS checkbox next to the quiz you want to add to Canvas.

Importing assignments into Canvas

Once you’ve chosen which assignment(s) you want to add to Canvas, download the Canvas CSV export by clicking the Get Canvas CSV option in the menu to the right of the sections list:

Now, in Canvas, go to your Grades page and click Actions > Import.

Click Choose File to locate the CSV you just downloaded from VUMIE, then click Upload Data.

From here, you’ll have some options to pick which assignments you want to import into Canvas.

Mapping Canvas information to VUMIE

Once assignments have been created in Canvas, you’ll want to store the Canvas assignment ID on its corresponding activity in VUMIE so that uploading grades in the future is seamless. The easiest way to do this is by going to the Grades page in Canvas, then clicking Actions > Export Entire Gradebook. A CSV will download, which you will use in the next step.

Automatic mapping

VUMIE has an upload utility that will automatically map the IDs of the Canvas assignments back to VUMIE for seamless integration. Click the Map Canvas IDs option in the menu to the right of the section list.

A modal will appear allowing you to pick a file to upload; choose the CSV file you downloaded from Canvas. Click the Upload file button to start the upload process. When complete, a “file uploaded successfully” message will appear. Your assignments are now linked both ways between VUMIE and Canvas!

Updating grades

Once IDs have all been mapped between VUMIE and Canvas, you can re-download the VUMIE CSV anytime and upload it again to Canvas using the steps above. Since the IDs are mapped, the grades should automatically update.
