Salmonella montevideo is a serotype of Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica (thus its correct nomenclature would be Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica serovar Montevideo). Salmonella montevideo (as it is more commonly known) is responsible for around 2% of human illnesses caused by Salmonella serovars, which typically feature cramping and diarrhea. These are straight rods that are usually motile and stain Gram negative. Gas is produced when fermenting sugars and hydrogen sulfide is frequently encountered. Growth occurs optimally at 35-37 C.
