This straight rod is somewhat larger than most other Gram negative rods. Most strains are motile by peritrichous flagella. Growth is best at 28-30 C but will occur at 35-37 C. Gas is produced from glucose. Frequently found in man, animals, and birds, and in natural sources such as soil, sewage, and water. It is not known to be a pathogen outside of immunocompromised patients. It has been recovered from blood, urine, and wound infections, and much more commonly from non-human sources such as sewage and soil, water and dairy products.
