This Gram positive coccus is most frequently found in long chains of spherical cells. Cells are catalase negative and exhibit facultatively anaerobic metabolism. Found in abscesses of freshwater dolphins in the Amazon River. Awareness of the organism has led to its recognition as one of the leading causes of fish loss in aquaculture farms worldwide. Both freshwater and marine fish are affected by the organism. Occasional infections in humans working with fish have been noted, including sepsis, Toxic Shock Syndrome, and endocarditis.
