This microbe is a member of Group 1b Bacilli known for centrally located oblong spores that do not distend the sporangium. They are catalase positive and ferment carbohydrates without production of gas. They grow well over a wide range of temperatures.
Bacillus licheniformis is commonly found in the soil and on bird feathers. It is not associated with human infections, although it has been recovered from a variety of infections in immunocompromised patients. As a food contaminant, it is found in dairy products and can contribute to “ropiness” in bread. It has commercial value through its production of a protease used in detergents, as well as antibiotics such as Bacitracin.
